From April, divorced parents in Japan can choose joint custody. This means both parents can have rights to raise their child. Parents can talk and decide if they want joint custody or single custody. Even if divorced already, they can ask the court to change it.
A revised Civil Code will be implemented on April 1st, allowing for joint custody after divorce in Japan. Divorced parents will now have the option to choose between joint or sole custody through mutual agreement. Furthermore, those already under sole custody arrangements can petition the family court for a change to joint custody.
The revised Civil Code, effective April 1st, introduces the option of joint parental authority post-divorce, affording divorced parents the latitude to determine, through mutual consultation, whether to opt for joint or sole custody. Moreover, individuals currently under single custody arrangements are now empowered to petition the family court for a modification towards joint custody.
